Brain Health

Did you know that your brain weighs in at only 3 pounds?

Though it’s small, it’s imperative that it be kept healthy. Your brain controls countless tasks every second of every day. While most of us think of the brain as the center of our consciousness and keeper of our memories, it also regulates body temperature, blood pressure, heart rate, and breathing. Plus it directs your muscles and nerves so you can walk, stand, and sit.

Yet, as we age, blood flow to the brain decreases, causing it to utilize oxygen and nutrients less efficiently. As a result, brain cells don’t communicate as well as they once did, making it harder for the brain to process thoughts, retain memories, and create new cells. Fatigue, stress and overwork can also have a negative impact on the brain.

Some essential brain supplements include Bacopa and Gingko Biloba. Both help with brain function, blood flow to the brain, memory and mental agility. These supplements combined with a nutrient rich diet, aerobic exercise, and stress management can help to keep you brain functioning on all cylinders.

Did you know that aging isn’t the only culprit that depletes our mental capacity?

People can begin experiencing mental lapses at relatively young ages. Studies have shown that some often experience cognitive decline after surgery. A major medical journal reported that people with diabetes are at risk for developing mental challenges earlier in life than those without the disease.

Other reports reveal people as young as 18, who have high blood pressure, can experience a decline in mental function - as can those with heart disease. The use of alcohol and tobacco can contribute to the problem, as well.

So how can we stay sharp?  The first thing we can do is exercise. Exercise can increase circulation to the entire body, bringing valuable nutrients to our cells. Equally critical is our nutrition. Grass-fed beef, fish, eggs, fruits and vegetables should be the cornerstone of our diet.

Recently, science has found that a ½ -cup of blueberries each day, along with fish oil, can be a great way to keep our minds sharp along with taking supplements like Ginkgo biloba.

Feed your brain what it needs.
